What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As my magazine targets a niche audience, finding a mainstream distributor would be difficult, but there are options available to consider. Since distributors like WH Smith are very widespread distributors, it may not be a good idea to use them as it may not be an efficient way to sell the magazines. Perhaps some sort of more localised or specialist distributor could be used, or perhaps even only go by subscription-based sales.

A similar magazine to mine is Brit-Asian.

It focuses mainly on Asian culture (mainly Indian/Bollywood) so seeks out to appeal to a particular niche audience. This is an online magazine, which means many more people can have access to it, but there may only be a select few people who read the magazine. This would be a good idea for my magazine, as I can publish the magazine online, as a subscription-based magazine, and won't have to worry about potentially wasting money printing and distributing the magazine.

  1. You probably need to explain that this is a bit of a niche audience and that there may be difficulties getting a distributor like WH Smith on board as they cater for the high street outlets and your mag may need more specialist or localised distribution. Are there any existing magazines catering for mixed-heritage target audiences? If so who produces them? Have you seen this online mag: http://www.brit-asian.com/TheMagazine.aspx

Perhaps your magazine might work better with an online presence rather than traditional print distribution? It is worth explaining that this could be a possibility.
